Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how FlagDex ("we", "our", or "the Game") handles information when you play our browser-based flag guessing game. We are committed to protecting your privacy and designed FlagDex from the ground up with minimal data collection in mind.
FlagDex operates entirely within your browser. There is no server-side account system, no user database, and no requirement to provide any personal information to play.
Data We Collect
FlagDex is designed to collect as little data as possible. Below is a complete summary of what we do and do not collect:
| Data Type | Collected? | Purpose | Stored Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name / Email / Account | ❌ Never | — | — |
| Game score / progress | ❌ Never persisted | Shown in-session only | — |
| Music volume preference | ✅ Yes (optional) | Remember your audio setting | Your device (localStorage) |
| SFX volume preference | ✅ Yes (optional) | Remember your audio setting | Your device (localStorage) |
| IP Address / Browser fingerprint | ❌ Never collected by us | — | — |
| Usage analytics / heatmaps | ❌ Never | — | — |
| Advertising data | ❌ Never | — | — |
The only data ever written to your browser's storage are your audio volume preferences, and these are stored locally on your device — they are never transmitted to us or any server.
How We Use Data
Since we collect virtually no personal data, our use of data is extremely limited:
- Your audio volume preferences (stored locally) are read back when you reload the game so your preferred settings are restored
- We do not use any data for advertising targeting
- We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for commercial purposes
- We do not perform any profiling or automated decision-making about you
Local Storage & Cookies
FlagDex uses your browser's localStorage API — a standard browser feature — to save your audio preferences (music volume, SFX volume) between sessions. This is:
- Stored entirely on your own device
- Never sent to any server
- Not a "cookie" in the traditional sense and does not track you across websites
- Easily cleared by you at any time via your browser settings
FlagDex does not set any third-party tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or cross-site tracking mechanisms of any kind.
Third-Party Services
To function properly, FlagDex loads certain resources from trusted third-party providers. These requests are made by your browser and may involve your IP address being sent to these providers as part of a standard web request:
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com) — loads the "Press Start 2P" and "Nunito" typefaces. Google may log the request (IP address, referrer URL) per their own privacy policy. No personal profile is created for FlagDex users.
- Flagpedia / Country Flags CDN — flag images are fetched from a content delivery network. Standard web server logs may record the request.
- Web Audio API — a native browser API used for generating sound effects entirely within your browser. No external network calls are made for audio.
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other behavioural analytics or advertising platforms.
Children's Privacy
FlagDex is designed to be a safe, educational experience for players of all ages, including children. We are committed to protecting children's privacy:
- We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13
- No account registration, name, or contact information is required to play
- We do not display behavioural advertising or use tracking that would be harmful to children
- Parents and guardians are encouraged to supervise their children's internet use
If you believe that a child under 13 has provided personal information to us in any way, please contact us immediately and we will take steps to address the situation.
Your Rights
Even though we collect almost no personal data, you retain full control over anything stored by FlagDex on your device:
- Right to Access: Your localStorage data contains only audio preferences (volume numbers). You can inspect these in your browser's developer tools.
- Right to Delete: Clear your browser's site data at any time to erase all FlagDex local preferences.
- Right to Portability: There is no server-side data to port — everything is local to your device.
- Right to Opt Out: Simply don't use the Game. There is no account to delete.
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, you may have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or equivalent legislation. Given our minimal data practices, these rights are already effectively satisfied.
For California residents: FlagDex does not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA, as we do not collect personal information to sell.
Data Security
Because FlagDex stores no personal data on servers, there is no central database that could be breached or leaked. The only data relating to your use of FlagDex exists in your browser's localStorage on your own device.
We recommend you follow general good cybersecurity practices:
- Keep your browser and operating system updated
- Use a modern, reputable browser
- Be cautious of unofficial versions or clones of FlagDex — only play from the official source
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised. We will not notify you of changes via email since we don't collect your email address — instead, please check this page periodically.
We will never change this policy in ways that make our data practices more invasive without clear and prominent notice within the Game itself.
